If you mention refresher training to your staff, do they roll their eyes? Often, refresher training is seen as a chore or a ‘tick box’ exercise, but it can actually have some really important benefits for organisations.
As you might have seen in our last blog, we’ll be running our first Mental Health First Aid Refresher course on the 28th October, then again on 12th December. More and more organisations are catching onto the fact that looking after the mental wellbeing of their employees not only makes good business sense, it’s the right thing to do, and education and awareness is a huge part of that. Having at least one Mental Health First Aider or Mental Health First Aid Champion in your organisation will position you as a company that takes mental health seriously, looks after its employees, and is a great place to work.
Here’s why refresher training can benefit your organisation.
Awareness comes from the top down
If you show yourself to be clued up as a manager, your employees will take things on board more readily. For example, if you attend training on mental health awareness, and you communicate this to employees and introduce initiatives, this shows that you take it seriously and it will gradually become part of the workplace culture.
It allows employees to add another string to their bow
Sometimes people get into a bit of a rut at work and that’s why it’s important to pay attention to developing your employees and getting the best out of them. Putting employees through Mental Health First Aid training increases their knowledge and adds another dimension to their job role, and refresher training will only strengthen that.
It allows your employees, and your organisation to keep up to date
Just as it does in any other field, the thinking and knowledge around mental health is changing all the time, so it’s important to keep up to date. If employees don’t refresh their knowledge they might not feel confident enough to carry out their very important role as a Mental Health First Aider or Mental Health First Aid Champion safely and correctly.
Our MHFA Refresher training
Our MHFA Refresher training will:

- Give them the opportunity to practically apply the Mental Health First Aid action plan in their organisation.
What does the MHFA Refresher training consist of?
It’s a 4-hour face to face course, and there will be a mix of presentations, discussions, and workshop activities.
How often do you need to do the refresher training?
MHFA England recommends that mental health first aiders and MHFA champions in your organisation attend a refresher course every year to allow them to fulfil their role safely and confidently.
