How many times have you gone on a training course and been inspired by what you’ve learned? How long is it before the knowledge and skills are forgotten, and the training manual is put in a drawer never to be seen again?
If you’re a trained first aider, or a health professional who uses what they’ve learned all of the time in their job, you might be an exception, but generally, if we don’t use what we’ve learned, we tend to lose it. This is where refresher courses come in.
Keeping vital skills up to date
In the case of mental wellbeing in the workplace, MHFA England has just announced their MHFA Refresher training which will enable mental health first aiders and MHFA champions to refresh their skills. First aiders have to update their skills all of the time, and there’s no reason why the same rules shouldn’t apply when it comes to mental health.
Knowing how to spot the early warning signs that someone is unwell, and knowing how to support them safely and effectively is crucial. Staff members who are designated mental health first aiders or MHFA champions need to be on top of their game both to help their colleagues, and to look after their own mental wellbeing.
What are the benefits of MHFA Refresher training for your organisation?
MHFA Refresher training will:
- Empower mental health first aiders and MHFA champions to maintain their skills and carry out their role safely and effectively
- Update their knowledge of how to support someone with mental health problems
- Give them the opportunity to practically apply the Mental Health First Aid action plan in their organisation.
What does the MHFA Refresher training consist of?
It’s a 4-hour face to face course, and there will be a mix of presentations, discussions, and workshop activities.
How often do you need to do the refresher training?
MHFA England recommends that mental health first aiders and MHFA champions in your organisation attend a refresher course every year to allow them to fulfil their role safely and confidently.
